Thirty directors/managers were approached and twenty-eight agreed to participate. Data processing and analysis of the responses was performed for the completed questionnaires. Results Data analysis did not demonstrate a surprisingly substantial deviation in the average score of positive responses of directors/managers in the PHCCs of Crete in comparison to those of directors/managers in the PHCCs of Epirus. The findings show that several gaps exist in terms of prevention and health promotion resources and activities in both regions, while e-health, electronic health record (EHR) and telemedicine services are poorly developed. Conclusion The study confirms that the Greek PHC is characterized by several inefficiencies, which may affect the quality of the services provided. An overall deficit has been emerged for PHCCs in both regions, a fact that indicates crucial points lacking in terms of overall PHC provision, thus adversely impacting upon living conditions, health quality and prevention.Aim To evaluate psychological distress and quality of life of patients with hematological malignancies, as well as to identify the prognostic factors that aggravate their condition. Methods A cross-sectional, descriptive study including 87 patients with Hematological Malignancies was conducted. In the present meta-analysis, our main objective was to evaluate the diagnostic value of miRNAs expressed in different body fluids for Alzheimer's disease (AD), more exactly to analyze the discriminative value of miRNAs between AD and control subjects. Methods Medline and EMBASE were searched for articles written in English, and because the result reporting modalities were extremely different in the studies included in the analysis, the current article comprises 2 meta-analyses, each of them using different statistical indicators. The first meta-analysis reviewed 10 studies, which were required to provide sufficient information to allow the calculation of AUC or Cohen's d for size effect. We proposed a second meta-analysis, starting from the drawbacks identified in this first approach, which used different statistical indicators (fold change) provided by other studies (8 studies). Results The present study offers an encouraging role of miRNA families in diagnosing AD. The heterogeneity of miRNA expression between the hippocampus, CSF and peripheral blood, the small sample size of each research study, as well as the different methods for miRNA detection remain the main obstacles in interpreting these results. However, the consumption of a gluten-free diet has been most commonly adopted as a special diet worldwide in the recent past. In the present study, we investigated the association of gluten intake and diabetes in Wistar albino rats. Methods Thirty adult Wistar rats were randomly divided into five groups control, diabetic, and test treated with pure gluten (100, 200 and 400 mg/kg body weight). Diabetes was induced in rats by intraperitoneal injection of Streptozotocin (65 mg/kg) after a dose of nicotinamide (110 mg/kg). Body weight, fasting blood glucose levels, postprandial blood glucose levels and histopathology of the pancreas were compared. Results Fasting blood glucose levels and postprandial blood glucose were significantly higher in diabetes animals but there were no significant changes in gluten treated groups. Other parameters were not significantly changed among different groups. Conclusions Gluten at doses 100 mg/kg, 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg is not a diabetogenic diet and hence it needs not be excluded from diet for the prevention and management of Type 2 diabetes mellitus.Background and aim Information in ultrasonography about reference values of nerves, particularly of those located in the neck is limited. The aim of the study is to demonstrate the feasibility of direct visualization of the vagus, hypoglossal and greater auricular nerves, testing the method on healthy volunteers and estimate the reference values for two perpendicular diameters and cross-sectional area (CSA). Methods A prospective study was carried out on 21 healthy volunteers (12 women and 9 men), recording their demographic characteristics. A 13 MHz transducer was used on a Hitachi EUB-8500 machine. The vagus nerve was measured at the bifurcation of common carotid artery (CCA) and at the intersection of the internal jugular vein with omohyoid muscle. The hypoglossal nerve was identified as it crosses the posterolateral border of the mylohyoid muscle in the submandibular space. The auricular nerve was identified on the superficial surface of the sternocleidomastoid muscle at 1 cm from its posterior margin. The mean CSA on axial scans, nerve width and thickness were determined.
